    Change for the better

Small improvements can lead to lasting change.

Kaizen (改善) is a Japanese word that means "change for the better." In the 1950s, Toyota engineers embraced this philosophy by letting any worker on the assembly line stop production the moment they spotted a defect. The team would then fix the root cause on the spot, rather than patching it downstream. Over decades, thousands of small improvements added up to a manufacturing system so efficient that American and European automakers spent the 1980s and 90s trying to reverse-engineer it.

Kaizen isn't limited to manufacturing. At Kansai International Airport in Osaka, staff haven't lost a single piece of luggage since the airport opened in 1994, despite handling roughly 10 million bags a year. The secret isn't one big innovation. It's continuous small improvements suggested by the people doing the work, not a fix handed down from above. As one baggage supervisor put it: "It's important for multiple staff members to share information to prevent mistakes arising from erroneous assumptions." Asked more directly what the secret was, he said there wasn't one. Just discipline, and following procedure.

At Festa Pizza Co., we've adopted a Kaizen mindset in everything we do: product design, fulfillment, and customer support before and after purchase. Some changes are easy and immediate. Others take time. Perfection isn't a destination, it's a journey. There's no limit to better, and we'll never settle for good enough.

We hope you'll commit to changing for the better too. Trading a delivery box for a home oven was already a big step. But this is a journey, not a destination, and there's more positive change in you if you want it. True joy often comes in small victories and signs of progress.

Our commitment to Kaizen isn't just internal. We want to help you improve too. As we've said all along, our support comes with your purchase. That's not an easy commitment to make, and it's not the most profitable one. Most businesses just want to transact and move on. We're not in this to sell you a pizza oven and some accessories. We're in it to help you change for the better.

Mike is the owner and operator of Pizzeria Modo Mio, with several locations in and around Charleston, South Carolina. He has been in the pizza world since he was 15, when he took his first job at a friend’s father’s pizzeria on Long Island. That’s where he got hooked. Between an Italian household, those early years behind the counter, and culinary school, cooking became his calling.

In addition to running his own pizzerias, Mike is a member of the U.S. Pizza Team and serves as an executive chef for a major pizza dough manufacturer.

At Festa, Mike will lead our customer support content, creating recipes and instructional videos to help owners get the most out of their ovens. When we say support comes with your purchase, we mean it, and Mike will be a big part of delivering on that promise.

Welcome to the Festa Family, Mike. We’re excited to have you on board.
